If you are in the market for writing or attempting to write your first ever song, then I hope I can help. Maybe you are already quite good at songwriting and wish to share some of that skill with other people, who are looking tips and ideas on how to start the writing process.
I’m hoping to have a blog full of helping ideas on how people work out their ways of putting their first song together and how to help a beginner in those delicate moments of writing their first song.
I have written my first successful attempt at songwriting.
Apart from writing down a few lyric lines from a Joan Jett song when I was about 12, this was my first real attempt to write a song which for me turned out successful, in the fact that I was able to start and finish this project, Which then gave me confidence to write a 2nd song and a 3rd etc.
My story for my first ever song goes something like this. It was for a song competition on a breakfast show. “No, I didn’t win”.
I had to get my neighbor to play the guitar for me, as I wasn’t ready to do that myself [probably still not capable]”some might say,” but that’s never stopped me though.
I was about 17 yrs old at that time, with no clue on how to write a song, but I forged ahead writing the lyrics in my head as I walked around a steaming hot car park collecting trolleys for my job.
I wasn’t able to write anything down on paper until I got home, But by then I had all the lyrics and melody sorted out, and all I needed was someone to play guitar for me to see if everything would fit together.
Fortunately, my neighbor and part-time guitar teacher came to my rescue to help me out. She played a basic 12 bar blue’s. For the vocals, I sang on it, my mum, neighbor and her daughter sang on the song as well. Everything worked out and I had my first finished and recorded song that I was able to send off for the competition to win a “Yamaha electric guitar”.
The steps to writing a song will come from the direction that you are currently heading in and just making a start no matter how insignificant you may think it is.
First thing to do is write one word down and go from there.
